How Heat Pumps Heat and Cool Your Home

A heat pump is a highly efficient, all-electric system that provides both heating and cooling by moving heat, rather than creating it. The same equipment works year-round by simply reversing the direction of heat flow depending on the season.

Heating Mode (Winter Operation)

Even in cold weather, outdoor air still contains heat energy. In heating mode, the heat pump pulls in outside air and passes it over a refrigerant. This refrigerant absorbs heat from the air and turns into a gas. The compressor then increases the pressure of that gas, raising its temperature. That heat is carried indoors, where it is released through the air handler and distributed throughout the home as warm air.

After the heat is delivered indoors, the refrigerant cools, passes through an expansion valve, and returns outside to repeat the cycle. This continuous process allows the system to provide steady, efficient heating—even in cold climates.

Cooling Mode (Summer Operation)

In cooling mode, the process reverses. Instead of pulling heat from outside air, the heat pump removes heat from inside the home. Warm indoor air passes over the indoor coil, where heat is absorbed by the refrigerant and carried outdoors. The outdoor unit then releases that heat into the outside air, leaving cooler, dehumidified air to be circulated back into the home.

This is the same principle used by traditional air conditioners, which is why heat pumps are able to replace both a furnace and an AC in a single system.

Environmental Impact

  1. Reduced Carbon Emissions Heat pumps move heat instead of burning fossil fuels, which significantly reduces on-site carbon emissions compared to gas, oil, or propane heating systems.

  2. Higher Energy Efficiency
Because heat pumps can deliver multiple units of heating or cooling for every unit of electricity used, they consume far less energy overall—helping lower emissions tied to energy production.

  3. Supports Cleaner Electricity
As the electrical grid continues to add renewable energy sources like wind and solar, heat pumps become even cleaner over time without needing equipment changes.

  4. Eliminates Combustion in the Home
All-electric heat pumps produce no exhaust gases, reducing indoor air pollution while removing the need for fuel delivery and combustion-based heating.

  5. Long-Term Climate Impact
With long service lives and lower energy demand, heat pumps help reduce total greenhouse gas emissions over decades of use.
